There is little or no contact with fellow classmates, or even faculty. This makes it difficult or impossible to make friends or professional contacts through a distance learning programs. Additionally, it is also often much harder to find scholarships for distance learning programs than more traditional academic programs. And for many people, it is hard to learn without the interactive environment of the classroom. Before choosing a distance learning degree program, you should ask yourself if it is compatible with your learning style, economic situation, and social and educational needs. Before selecting a distance learning program, you should be aware of the number of scams which will try to make you pay for a meaningless certificate. Many programs are non-accredited. If you enter one of these programs, you will have to do little to no coursework for your degree, but the degree you receive will be worthless: no more valuable then if you had printed it out on your own computer. Fortunately, it is easy to see if a program has been accredited. Almost any field of study will have an accreditation board which makes lists of accredited schools available to the public. This way, you can know ahead of time that you are getting valuable educational training. Many people dream of continuing their education but many do not have the time or the money to invest in an advanced degree program. The demands of work and family take a heavy toll and many people lose sight of their dream to earn a Master’s Degree. A Master’s Degree can benefit many of us, but it seems nearly impossible, especially those of us who rely on our paychecks to get by. Distance learning programs may be the answer we are looking for when it comes to advancing to a Master’s level education. A distance learning degree from a reputable school carries as much weight as a traditional degree. Advanced degrees often mean advancement in the workplace. Many of us find ourselves in dead-end jobs and the only hope to move up in our companies is to obtain a Master’s Degree in our field. However, a Master’s program is grueling. Many of us would have to travel to get to class and this commute in addition to the daily commute to work would really dig into our time schedule. A distance learning degree is earned at home. Students do not have to commute to get to class and they can attend class at any time of the day. The ability to create your own class schedule is one of the most appealing features of earning a distance learning degree. Classes are formed online and each student gains access to the classes he is required to take. These programs are designed for adults who are working at least part time in their field. What is really beneficial about distance education programs is that all of the lectures are in text. The students do not have to take notes and they never have to worry about missing essential information. You do not have to be a computer wizard to take online courses. Technical support is usually available twenty-four hours a day. The educational institution’s technical support staff is usually professional and efficient. You may learn a few things about computers in general as you take your online education journey. My experience with Master’s level distance education courses began in 2002. I entered a Master’s Degree program that was to be completed in eighteen months. I loved the classes and the professors were extremely knowledgeable. My classmates were intelligent professionals and I am very glad that the program I entered offered team projects, so I had an opportunity to collaborate on assignments with my peers. With all of the benefits, I did come across a few stumbling blocks. There are some things to consider when applying for a distance learning degree program. You have to have a reliable computer and a flawless Internet provider. Losing a connection can be detrimental and if your computer crashes, you can lose all of your work in one fell swoop. Make sure to save your class work on discs each time you contribute to your assignments. And be sure to have a back-up Internet provider in case your server fails. A major obstacle I face in earning my Master’s in Education online is finding placement for my internship. Make sure that you have spoken to someone about placement. You are responsible for finding your own placement for your internship. I should be completing my distance education degree in 2006, but I can not find placement for student teaching. This obstacle is vexing, but my academic advisor is stepping in to help assure that I complete the program. Two last things to consider: if you don't like to write and you are not self-motivated, do not pursue a degree online. The programs require a tremendous amount of writing because all class interaction is in text. The programs are also very demanding. You have to motivate yourself to complete assignments promptly. Distance education is not for procrastinators. However, if your are a self-motivated person who likes to read and write and you want to continue your education while you work, a distance learning degree may be ideal for you. http://calgarytransitschedule.com/distance-learning-degree/

Oftentimes, teens get so busy that they find it difficult to focus on one thing at a time, often leading to declining grades. One way that you can help your teen do better academically, and in all other areas of life, is to teach them good organizational skills and study habits. By helping your teen realize the importance of organization, what time they do spend on homework and studying will be maximized, meaning that they do better in school, and have more time to pursue other interests.
If you are at home when your kids come home from school, you can probably attest to the fact that the first thing they do when they walk in the door is drop their stuff and head off for some fun and food, before even thinking about their homework or studying for that big test. There is nothing wrong with taking some time to unwind and get a snack, as long as it is a quick break, and then right back to the studies. It is all too easy for your teen to get involved in other activities, and shove their homework to the back of their mind, meaning that they either have to stay up late to get it done, or they just neglect it altogether. You may even convince your teen to try coming home, grabbing a light snack, and then taking a short nap, so that they are more relaxed, and more prepared to do their homework. However you do it, it is important that you stress the importance of not procrastinating when it comes to their daily assignments and studies, that after a snack and a few minutes of break-time, homework and studying has to be done before anything else. You should also make certain that your teen has a clean, quiet, well-organized space in which to do homework and study. Make certain that the desk or area is well stocked with pens, pencils, paper, etc. Everything should be placed within easy reach, and you should make sure that you think about your teen’s comfort and personal preferences when designing the area. For chronic procrastinators, or those who often just skip their homework completely, you may have to check after them to make sure everything is complete. If your child comes home from school at 4pm, create a rule that all homework and studying has to be turned into you no later than 7pm, and that nothing else can be done until you have the assignment in your hands. Your children may not like you, but they will get better grades, and learn to accept the fact that they have to do homework, if they ever hope to have any free time of their own. If your teenager gets bombarded with a lot of homework everyday, allow time for a break every half-hour or so, give them about ten minutes to grab a drink, or go outside, etc. You may have to monitor breaks for chronic procrastinators, but once your children learn that you are not going to bend on the rule, they will start to accept it. Breaks will help your child stay focused on the task at hand, whether it is reading, or writing an essay. It can be a nightmare trying to fight your children, particularly teenagers, to get their homework done, at a reasonable time. Many of them want to wait until the very last minute, often staying up well into the night to finish an assignment or study for a test, and not only is the quality of work usually bad, they usually feel bad and have no energy the next day, compounding the issue. So, if your child has bad homework or study habits, the sooner you take control and change things, the better for everyone involved! http://calgarytransitschedule.com/study-tips-that-can-help-your-kids-stay-focused-during-middle-and-high-school/ |
